Chapter Five

Cats Rule and Thugs Drool

The next second, I felt a strange buzz of magic behind me and heard a muffled “Ow!”

I turned my head enough to see what had become of the witch while still keeping an eye on the room, and found her rubbing her nose and glaring daggers at the air above my head.

WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

“You’re telling me, you stupid, flea-bitten little runt,” Tina hissed. “I can’t get through the freaking door!”

THAT WOULD BE THE WARD. IT MUST BE SET TO BLOCK HUMAN ENTRY. THEY OBVIOUSLY DID NOT EXPECT A CAT. BUT THAT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM.

“Then wha—” Tina began.

That was when the other thief, the one no doubt sent by the Romanos, tried to shoot me.

Thankfully, I’d heard the villain shift into position, so I was already moving by the time they pulled the trigger. There was the sharp crack of a shot fired, but no booming echo followed to set my ears ringing, as if the sound of the gun was suppressed by some means, magical or mundane. The bullet ricocheted off the floor behind me and angled straight up toward Tina. I heard her yelp in alarm, but did not have time to look back to see if she had remained unscathed. All I had time for was a brief and possibly misspelled message before my mad dash took me into the thick maze of packing crates—it was hard to concentrate while dodging bullets, so don’t you dare laugh.

SND PERCE HALP NOW.

Hopefully the witch would understand and get that stupid, good-for-nothing poltergeist in there to assist me before we were all discovered and caught.

The good news was, the room’s stacks of crates gave me the terrain advantage.

The bad news was, I was on my own.

So, like any smart predator faced with a larger predator out for its blood, I found a safe hiding place and began formulating my plan.

If it worked, I was going to recover the artifact, make this sorry excuse for a thief wish they’d never been born, and get us out alive. My plan did ride on the assumption that Tina was competent enough to avoid getting shot, but as long as she held up that end of the deal, we’d be golden.

It was the work of moments to creep silently between the various stacks of crates and find a position behind the interloper. The man was crouched behind two tall stacks of containers with a crack between them wide enough to shoot through. He remained there, quiet and still as a fox waiting to pounce on a rabbit. Tina had disappeared from the doorway, but my sensitive ears could hear her muttering lurid curses under her breath.

That was a good sign. People bleeding out from gunshot wounds generally went into shock, so as long as she continued calling me nasty names, she was most likely safe.

The uninvited thief surely knew it too, and was waiting with his gun raised, no doubt hoping his rival would foolishly show her face.
